3D CAD

The first 3D CAD programs were developed by the Aviation Industries and rapidly found their way into all areas of Manufacturing. They allowed Engineers to design the entire Boeing 767 in the computer. The additional packages (FEA, Thermal, Fluids, Interference, Motion Analysis etc.) allowed Engineers to confirm that all aspects of the design would work properly before they purchased a single part saving innumerable hours and dollars that would have been spent on Research and Development.

3D Printers

The first 3D printers were called "Rapid Prototypers" and were used by manufacturers to allow Designers and Engineers to see an actual model of their part prior to spending the time and money required to produce the part. As most parts require several revisions before the design is approved for manufacture this saves a tremendous amount of time and money. The following FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) 3D printers are available for use in the school.

3D pens

The 3D pen provides the user with a basic understanding of how an FDM 3D printer works. It uses the same plastic filament and extrudes it through a heated nozzle. Unlike the printers, the user controls the extruded filaments placement with their hand.

3D Print Club

The 3D Print Club was formed to provide anyone with an interest in 3D printing a hands on opportunity to investigate the technology. The club members will be assembling printer kits, calibrating these kits and the NW Reprap printer assembled by the Robotics Team. They will also be troubleshooting the hardware and software of these kits once assembled and the 2 schools printers to maintain and improve the printers operation. All members will be required to join a class set up in Project Ignite and complete 5 lessons in Tinkercad prior to being allowed to print. After completing the lessons qualified members will be allowed to print on any available printer

To join Project Ignite use this Class Code - 7FY0-BUZQ

Printer Status

School's 2 Printrbot Metal Plus's with heated beds

BuildTak has replaced the Kapton tape on the heated beds

Most parts will print with no heat applied to the bed

Robotics Teams NW RepRap Prusa Mendel

Spool holder and power supply mount completed

ABS printing temperature deformed all extruder mounts (PLA parts with 25% infill)

PLA parts reprinted on this printer in ABS with 100% infill

Parts will be replaced and a cooling fan will be added

All parts replaced, cooling fan added and printer recalibrated

Printer is complete and in service 5/16/16

Folger Tech RepRap 2020 Prusa i3

1st kit complete, calibrated and given to Ms. Romano by the students. 5/16/16

2nd kit assembled. Requires minor repairs and calibration. 6/3/16
